The folks at Information is Beautiful, with this smart animated primer, bring us even more reason to believe in the Internet of Things as an idea that will improve the way we live our lives on a daily basis.
From the Internet of Computers, to the Internet of People, to the Internet of Things – this data visualization sets up the stages that led to now, and it shows us what is possible within the IoT construct.
“Things can share information, be monitored & controlled, creating smart, responsive networks,” IiB says within the visual. It describes this connection as a vast autonomous nervous system – which is precisely how we’ve described our Fybr Gateway system to network information-gathering sensors in smart cities.

But the graphic isn’t just a beautiful presentation – there’s useful information in there, too. Like Gartner’s projection of 26 billion connected things worldwide by 2020, up from 7 billion in 2014. Or Forbes’s forecast of 253 million connected cars by 2020, up from 23 million now.
When we use the Internet of Things to connect the webs of people with their devices with their cities, we can improve the communities where we live and work. This graphic is a great illustration of just how those webs can intersect.
